Recreating a map

Octuber 2, 2024

This week I recreated a map from El País on the results of the Venezuelan presidential elections. Kiko Llaneras, Daniele Grasso, and Luis Sevillano Pires participated in its creation.

Highlights

It isn't the first time that I have visualized a map, but it is the first time that I have been able to customize the labels so much.

  • In other visualizations, I have visualized state labels, but I had never created functions to determine if the label was going to show or hide, either by the size of the width or height of the state or if it overlapped another label.
  • States with two-word names were a problem until I managed to write a function that would determine if they had two words and separate them into distinct lines.
  • This is the first time I had the opportunity to move the position of a single state's label to improve its readability. Sometimes the center of the state may not be the best position for the name
